Even though sailing has been around for thousands of years, it wasn’t until the 17th century that sports sailing was first introduced to the public. It’s a perfect way to get away from it all and experience the freedom of the water. While most people around the world are passionate about sailing, it was once an exclusive activity for the rich.

Today, sailing is a sport that’s accessible to everyone. For some, it’s a fun way to spend time with family and friends, while for others, it’s a great opportunity to participate in races.

Even though their massive ships could sail across the oceans, sailors in Holland didn’t start to practice the sport until the 17th century. During this time, the Dutch would use boats that were up to 65 feet long to compete. Eventually, the sport was brought to the American colonies. In this article, we’ll talk about the history of the sport and how it evolved into what it is today.

How Competitive Sailing Began

Before sailing became a popular sport, it was actually an accident that started it all when man realized that he could use the wind to propel his boat. Sailing eventually became a means of transportation for people. The origins of the sport can be traced back to the 17th century in the Netherlands. During this time, many sailors in the country formed yacht clubs to promote the sport.

After the Dutch gave Charles II a yacht, the first yacht club was established in 1720 in Ireland. Over a hundred years later, in 1844, the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) was established in the U.S.

The NYYC was started by John Cox, a prominent New York businessman. He and his fellow sailors would regularly compete against each other. To better promote the sport, the NYYC decided to establish an international sailing league. They traveled to Britain to compete against their local counterparts.

The first international sailing tournament was held in England. The trophy, which was called the Hundred Guineas Cup, was won by the Americans. However, they decided to change the name of the competition and the trophy to America’s Cup. This event continues to be one of the most prestigious sailing tournaments in the world. During their 132-year reign as the world’s sailing champion, the Americans were finally defeated by Australia.

America’s Cup is now handled by the International Yacht Racing Union, which was created in 1907. This organization has strict rules that are designed to ensure that the races are safe. Sailing was officially recognized as an Olympic sport in 1896.

Due to the increasing popularity of sport sailing, it has become one of the most challenging and popular sports in the world. People consider it a serious way of life and a rewarding hobby.
