Getting started in competitive sailing can be an intimidating aspiration, especially the older one gets. However, this collaborative sport is not as exclusive as it once was, and age can actually be of great benefit to the crew. If you wish to grow involved in competitive sailing later in life, there are various ways to do so.

Several experts have noted that the sport has changed significantly due to the introduction of a new handicapping system for tournaments. This new system has been designed to reduce the number of sails needed and improve the overall playing field.

The members of competitive sailing teams often have key positions in the team. These include the navigator, tactician, and crew bosses. They are expected to perform their duties in a way that makes the competition successful. Aside from being able to sail the boat, these individuals are also expected to improve their skills and knowledge of the race course. Some captains don’t want to have a specific position due to their desire to be able to maneuver around and put out fires.

The members of competitive sailing teams often enjoy learning from the pros. Therefore, as you network your way onto a boat, consider it a learning experience for yourself. The earlier you can network, the better. Some captains even lock down their teams six months in advance of regattas. However, for more low-key races, you could be wandering down a dock and be placed on a sailboat that same afternoon if they have room for more crew. It begins with a small knowledge of the sport and strategic networking.

Permanent crew members do a great job of preparing the boat for events. They also often tend to stay later in the evening to help with the repairs and other tasks.

If people are interested in becoming more competitive, they can start by sailing with a group of like-minded individuals. Having fun along the way can help people feel like they have accomplished something.

Even though you might think of yourself as too old to begin competitive sailing, you can still learn to sail. With the proper equipment and designs, it shouldn’t be a problem for older people to start taking up the sport.
